Inexperienced. Unethical. Not the DA We Need.

As DA in the 80’s, Keeler mismanaged the job
and derailed the office. He does NOT deserve another chance.
Unethical
Keeler violated ethical obligations to a former client, using information from the client’s case in a disparaging way during one of his political campaigns.1
Untrustworthy
As a public defender, Keeler was frequently removed from cases at the request of his clients. A state appeals court rebuked him for “ineffective assistance of counsel” to an indigent criminal defendant.2
Incompetent
During his single term at District Attorney in the 1980s, Keeler repeatedly bungled key criminal cases – most notably a quadruple murder prosecution. In that case, no one was convicted of murder.
“Mr. Gates was charged with killing his father, Robert Gates Sr., 39; his brother, Robert Gates Jr., 19; his cousin, Jason Gates, 3; and father’s girlfriend, Cheryl Brahm, 36.”3
“The Columbia County District Attorney, Eugene Keeler, pushed through reporters and declined to comment.”3
“A former classmate of Mr. Gates, Miles McDonald, testified during the trial that Mr. Gates intimated in late September or early October of last year that he had a plan to kill his father.”3
“Mr. McDonald said Mr. Gates told him and another youth, Damian Rossney, of the plan in their high school computer room.”3
Unqualified
Keeler himself has admitted that he hasn’t even practiced law in 10 years.5 And he wants to delegate prosecution decisions to an "advisory team"5 – even though state law mandates that the DA, not an unelected outside group, make those decisions.
